The beautiful resort of Andermatt is in the Useren Valley and makes up part of the Uri region of Switzerland. It is a popular ski resort thanks to its superb alpine location, and is home to a population of little over 1000 people. The village atmosphere is part of the attraction of this glorious little village, along with the skiing!
Like many similar resorts Andermatt saw a decline in popularity in the early 20th century, having previously been a very popular resort for those who wished to indulge in winter sports. However, with skiing increasing in popularity and people searching for better value in their choice of resorts it has recently undergone something of a revival. A number of new hotels and guest houses have sprung up as a result, and the region is home to many expansion plans that put it at the forefront of such resorts in the region.
Skiing in Andermatt takes in some quite spectacular scenery as this section of the Alps is very much a favoured location. There is a total of 56k of downhill skiing available on 24 different pistes, and the 13 ski lifts and varied grades of runs make this a popular resort with experts and novices alike. The highest lift reaches almost 3000m and the downhill available extends to a maximum of over 1500m.
Five kilometres of the pistes have snowmaking machines – creating natural snow for those days when the coverage is light – making this an interesting all-round venue, and the village itself is home to a quiet local nightlife and excellent, picturesque views from every angle. The area is well regarded by snowboarders, too.
There are four airports close within two hours of the village making this one of the more accessible of Swiss alpine resorts, and there is much to be said for the use of Basel for its accessibility within an hour and a half. It is also close to no fewer than four alpine passes as it stands at a natural crossroads in the mountains, and is thus well served by the road networks.
There are plenty of hotels and guest houses to choose from in Andermatt, and these range from two to four star accommodation. Also, this picturesque region is also home to a number of chalets to let and other accommodation options, and offer value that compares well with the more expensive resort of St Moritz.
You will find that Andermatt offers much better value than many nearby resorts thanks to its relatively recent revival, and a two star hotel room can be found for as little as €65 per night. Four star accommodations will typically cost around twice that amount – very reasonable in comparison with some places – and there are numerous chalets for let at prices ranging from €400 to over €700 per week, depending upon your choice. This is a good value, pretty and well served village that offers excellent skiing and a good family holiday location.
