The British ski travel market has shrank almost 11% last season to just
over 950,000 ski travellers. At its peak there where close to 1.2m Bits
enjoying an annual ski break, now the numbers are almost down by 250.000,
with spare capacity in flights, transfers and accommodation. The big question
for the 2011/2012 winter season is whether the current financial austerity
measures reduce the number of ski travellers even further and what impact
will this have on ski accommodation prices?
Last year, France, the biggest destination for British skiers, took the
biggest hit as cost-conscious skiers defected to less expensive resorts
in Italy and Austria. France is still the most popular destination among
British skiers, but it's the smaller, cheaper resorts have done better
last year, partially helped by the amazing snow conditions even at low
altitude. It remains to be seen if overseas skiers are willing to take
the 'snow' risk this season and book their holiday in smaller often lower
altitude ski resorts.
Ski travel operators believe that the ski market is set for a recovery
this winter despite drop of Brits travelling last season. Many operators
used their buying power to secure better accommodation prices and are
trying to tempt skiers back to the slopes with some great deals. Even
offers for short breaks are on the up as operators try to match growing
demand for mini ski breaks. In the past, operators only offered short
breaks to certain resorts, during special low season periods and on specific
days. Now the short break offers included many resorts in Austria, Italy,
Switzerland, Bulgaria and Slovenia.
The independent ski travel market fell sharply last season and many no-frills
carriers reduced capacities to airports near ski resorts. However self-catering
is on the up, as many holidaymakers prefer to stay in rather than going
for an expensive meal out. Companies specialising on self-catering such
as Pierre & Vacances reported large increases on bookings made last
year. This will be seen as good news for independent accommodation owners
for the coming season.
