The popular skiing resort of Abetone is situated in the Tuscany region of Italy and makes up part of the Province of Pistoia. The historic and beautiful city of Florence lies just 80km away from Abetone, and the village itself – with a population of less than 1000 – is a welcoming and friendly place with much to recommend it to visitors. Abetone has been a popular ski resort for some time now and the region offers excellent conditions and some spectacular views, and accommodation is plentiful and varied.
The Appenine Mountains form the backdrop to the region and offer some of the best skiing in this area of Europe. With a maximum height of just under 2000m above sea level the slopes are well tended and easily accessible. The region surrounding the village offers over 50 chair lifts taking visitors to the main skiing access points in the mountains – with Abetone itself at 1400m being the most popular – and 27 of the lifts are within the immediate vicinity of the village. There are 20 pistes to choose from and 20 kilometres of the available slopes offer snow making facilities for guaranteed skiing.
As a popular Appenine resort the village of Abetone is close to the major road networks and links are very good to the surrounding towns and cities. The nearest major city is Pistola, on the main A11/E35 road, and the nearest railway station is at Luca, a little over 70km from Abetone by road. This offers excellent links to Rome and Venice, the locations of the nearest international airports with the latter just three hours distant. Italy is home to some of the best resorts of this kind, and there are several more in the direct vicinity of Abetone.
Abetone, and the area in which it is located, is home to a number of accommodation options for skiers and those seeking winter sport holidays. The hotels in the resort range from spectacular luxury four star hotel offerings with the very best in Italian welcomes and creature comforts to many more simple establishments that offer great value for money. Chalets and apartments include a beautiful chalet not far from the village itself in a secluded setting that sleeps up to six people – one of many that are suitable for groups and families - and there are many more to choose from across a variety of levels of accommodation. Italy is considered good value for money in comparison to the likes of Switzerland.
Accommodation can be very reasonably priced. A luxury chalet with stunning views can be hired for as little as €380 per week while a typical four star hotel will cost from €70 per night for a room. These are very reasonable prices that vary during the season, yet highlight the value of Abetone and the Tuscany region for skiers. Look out for early season offers as hotels try and capitalise on the off season lull.
