Vallorcine – Chamonix’s Secret Getaway!
We love skiing in Chamonix, but sometimes the crowds and the buses can be frustrating. But only 20 minutes away is Chamonix’s secret getaway – Vallorcine, a traditional and pretty French village that links directly to Le Tour.
Our friends at the Bellevue Alpine Lodge – a British owned gite and B&B in Vallorcine – bring us up to date with the skiing in the area:
The closest lift to the Bellevue Alpine Lodge is the modern gondola that lifts you from resort to Tete de Balme at 2770m.
The La Balme area is regarded by many as the best skiing in Chamonix, with varied terrain and great snow.
It’s a good beginners area, with wide well-groomed pistes. For the off piste fans there are plenty of challenging runs on all areas of the mountain.
Often you get the best snow in Chamonix as the northern aspect helps keep the snow light and fresh. This is especially true for the skiing on the Les Esserts chairlift. Watch out though – it’s also a place renowned for avalanches.
There are several good mountain restaurants. The Charamillon halfway up from Le Tour is a typical self- service restaurant. Other good options are the L’Arret Bougnette at the base of the Vallorcine gondola.
Recently opened, Les Ecuries under the ‘Les Autannes’ chairlift has indoor and outdoor tables and at the bottom of La Foret Verte, the home run to Vallorcine, is Café.
The Bellevue Alpine Lodge is one of the most charming hotels in Vallorcine, with 5 bedrooms and four bathrooms. They offer bed and breakfast and half board options and are open all year round.
